UI/UX Designer

Douala, Cameroon
Full-time
Posted April 21, 2026

About the Role

You'll own the visual identity of Pronto across both the rider and driver mobile apps, the operations dashboard (Pronto Admin), and the public marketing website. You'll design for Douala first — a city navigated by landmarks rather than street addresses, on low-end Android devices (Tecno, Infinix, Itel) with 2 GB of RAM, under ENEO power rationing and 4G that fades around the Wouri Bridge at rush hour. Kinshasa follows in Year 2, so every design decision needs to hold up across two markets and two currencies without being rebuilt.

This is a foundational role on a small team. You'll define the design language, build the component system, create marketing and driver-recruitment assets, and spend time in Douala understanding how bendskin drivers and riders actually use our product in the field.

What You'll Work On

Mobile app design (primary focus):

  • Rider app — booking flow, map interactions, destination search, fare estimate, ride tracking, rating and feedback, safety surfaces (SOS, trip sharing, helmet check)
  • Driver app — ride request popup, navigation, earnings and wallet, agent recruitment mode, document upload and onboarding
  • A shared design system in Figma — colors, typography, spacing, iconography, motion, and components (buttons, inputs, sheets, cards) that scale across both apps
  • Pixel-level polish for low-end Android — touch targets, legibility in direct sunlight, and graceful degradation on 720×1280 screens

Marketing & recruitment:

  • Pronto website (Next.js + Tailwind) — layouts, illustration, iconography, and polished marketing pages
  • Driver recruitment materials — flyers, social posts, WhatsApp-ready graphics for parcs de motos and syndicate channels in Douala
  • Brand collateral — pitch decks, investor materials, merchandise (branded Pronto helmets, chasuble-compatible driver gear)

Research & field work:

  • Usability testing in Douala with riders and drivers on real devices, real networks
  • Synthesizing feedback into design changes and documenting patterns for the team
  • Contributing to the operations dashboard UX (admin-editable restriction zones, driver approval queues, safety alerts)

Requirements

  • 3+ years of product design experience, with a strong portfolio of mobile work
  • Proficiency in Figma (auto-layout, variants, component libraries, prototyping)
  • Strong visual design fundamentals — typography, color, hierarchy, spacing
  • Ability to create marketing and brand collateral (social posts, flyers, decks) in Figma, Adobe CS, Canva, or similar
  • Working knowledge of frontend — HTML, CSS, Tailwind, and enough React to hand off cleanly (or prototype in code when useful)
  • Experience building and maintaining design systems
  • Understanding of iOS and Android platform conventions
  • Comfort conducting usability testing and field research
  • Fluent English (written and verbal) — all team communication is in English

Nice to Have

  • Experience designing for low-end Android devices and emerging markets
  • Background in mobility, fintech, marketplace, or on-demand products
  • Experience with motion design and micro-interactions (react-native-reanimated, Lottie)
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted design tools (Figma AI, Midjourney, DALL-E) used as part of your workflow
  • French language ability (helpful for Douala context — Cameroon is officially bilingual)

What Matters More Than Your Resume

  • You can design a complete feature from research to handoff — not just polish someone else's wireframes
  • You design for the real device and the real network, not the Figma mirror
  • You're comfortable going into the field, talking to drivers, and changing your mind based on what you see
  • You sweat the details — loading states, empty states, error states, and the quiet moments between taps

Tech Stack

  • Design — Figma (source of truth for mobile + web + admin)
  • Marketing site — Next.js + Tailwind CSS (you'll hand off, occasionally implement)
  • Mobile apps — React Native + Expo with NativeWind — designs ship as code
  • Motion — react-native-reanimated, Lottie (where relevant)
  • Brand/marketing assets — Figma, Adobe Creative Suite or Canva — your pick
  • Collaboration — Slack, Linear, Loom, Notion
  • AI tooling — Claude and other AI tools where they accelerate work

How We Work

  • Small team, high ownership. Five engineers + you. No design committee. You set the bar.
  • One-week cycles. Plan Monday, ship Friday. Design runs one cycle ahead of engineering.
  • Async-first. Slack, Linear, Loom. One 30-minute weekly sync. Walkthroughs happen on Loom, not in meetings.
  • Field-tested in Douala. QA tests every feature on Tecno and Infinix phones over MTN/Orange 4G under ENEO load-shedding. You'll watch your designs live in that environment.
  • French and Cameroonian Pidgin English matter. French is the default UI language at launch, English is first-class, and Pidgin lands in v1.2 — your design system needs to handle all three without breaking.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience
  • Creative scope: You define the product and brand experience from scratch, across two markets
  • Impact: Your designs are what millions of Douala commuters touch to get home safely each day
